Please join Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service for a book talk with Dr. Joseph Sassoon and Dean Joel Hellman to discuss Dr. Sassoon's latest book, The Sassoons: The Great Global Merchants and the Making of an Empire. About the book: A spectacular generational saga of the making (and undoing) of a family dynasty: the riveting untold story of the gilded Jewish Bagdadi Sassoons, who built a vast empire through global finance and trade—cotton, opium, shipping, banking—that reached across three continents and ultimately changed the destinies of nations. With full access to rare family photographs and archives. About the author: Joseph Sassoon is Professor of History and Political Economy at Georgetown's Center for Contemporary Arab Studies and holds the al-Sabah Chair in Politics and Political Economy of the Arab World. He is also a Senior Associate Member at St Antony’s College, Oxford. His research interests include political economy, economic history, Iraq, Iraqi refugees, and authoritarianism.

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center offers internships for a funded project examining how global change drivers impact local biodiversity and ecosystem function in the Chesapeake Bay land and seascapes. The intern works to foster relationships with stakeholders in the region, including conservation practitioners, land and business owners, and scientists at government, non-profit, and academic institutions. Intern would be based in Edgewater, MD with the opportunity for fully in-person or hybrid (part-time virtual, part-time in-person) work. The internship will be funded for 6 months at $600/week, with the opportunity to extend up to a total of 33 weeks ($20,000 total) based on satisfactory progress.
